RoomBuddies.com is a national flat and house share website and one of the market leaders in this industry. However this was only achieved after a SEO campaign was implemented so that those looking for a flat share or landlords could easily find the website. People searching the internet rightly or wrongly associate search engine rankings with trustworthiness, so in a market such as this, it is imperative to rank highly.

For the benefit of this case study, we will show you how we managed to get RoomBuddies.com from not being ranked for London and Manchester related terms on Google.co.uk to pages 1 and 2 in the space of one month.

Keyword Google.co.uk Rank (December 2009) Google.co.uk Rank (November 2009)
London House Shares 5 Not Ranking
Manchester Houseshares 9 Not Ranking
London Houseshares 10 Not Ranking
Manchester Flatmates 10 Not Ranking
Flatmates in Manchester 10 Not Ranking

How was this achieved?

The main emphasis of the strategy was to get Google and other search engines to rank RoomBuddies.com for London and Manchester related house and flatshare terms. The main emphasis of this was done with on site search engine optimisation.

Keyword and competitor research and analysis

We began by researching and analysing which keywords were most used by those searching for house and flat shares in these cities, once these were established, we calculated which ones would be the most beneficial to the company using specific formulae and focused our attentions on the top ranking keywords and phrases.

On-Site Search Engine Optimisation

It was recommended that RoomBuddies.com introduced specific city pages for London, Manchester and other popular flat and house sharing cities which would give the opportunity for these keywords and phrases to be used to improve the keyword density. The end results were London House and Flatshares and Manchester House and Flat Shares.

Off-Site Search Engine Optimisation

As with any SEO campaign, we began building links to these specific pages which created relevant deep links and this contributed to the specific keywords and phrases to be ranked.

PizzaToppings.co.uk was designed and built with the sole purpose of demonstrating our SEO skills within a relatively competitive market (hence the lacklustre design of the website).

PizzaToppings.co.uk was set live and available for crawling by the major search engines in April 2009. The effects of our SEO campaign were noticeable within weeks and with no updating since June, we consider this website to have been effectively optimised as the rankings from Google.co.uk show.

Keyword Google.co.uk Rank (December 2009) Number of Competitive Websites
Weird Pizza Topping 1 209,000
Dominos Competition 1 118,000
Dessert Pizza 1 65,500
Pizza Topping 1 57,100
Pizza Toppings 1 53,400
Fish Pizza Topping 1 40,200
Seafood Pizza Topping 1 26,200
Yeastless Pizza Dough 1 331
Vegetarian Pizza Toppings 2 40,100
Vegetarian Pizza Topping 2 35,800
Chicken Pizza Topping 2 34,900
Meat Pizza Topping 2 23,900
Pizza Topping Recipes 4 20,300

In addition to this, other statistics to note are:

  • the website has been found using over 6,000 different keywords and phrases
  • of which the website is ranked in the top five for over 60 keywords and phrases
  • and ranked in the top ten for over 80 keywords and phrases
  • it is second in the rankings for the term “Delia Smith pizza dough” behind Delia’s own website
  • it is third in the rankings for the term “Jamie Oliver pizza tomato sauce” behind Jamie’s and the Channel 4 websites

How was this achieved?

We didn’t do anything special to achieve these results. We just followed the same search engine optimisation strategy that we would advise you to take which as stated throughout the website is done in three phases:

Keyword and competitor research and analysis

The first phase was to analyse and research which keywords and phrases were most searched for by people when looking for pizzas or pizza topping ideas and recipes.

Using this information we devised onsite and offsite search engine optimisation strategies that identified which were the most important words to use throughout the website.

On-Site Search Engine Optimisation

The onsite search engine optimisation included:

  • structuring the website in a way that made it easier for search engine robots to crawl the website
  • all content pages were written with the keywords and phrases in mind
  • all meta tags were completed and compliant to a set of basic rules
  • a search engine friendly sitemap was created

Off-Site Search Engine Optimisation

The offsite search engine optimisation phase focused on obtaining a low volume of high quality back links to prove that quality far outweighs quantity in regards to off-site SEO. In addition, due to the nature of the website we found that the recipes acted as a link bait as a number of websites linked to them, creating one way deep links which helped to improve our search engine ranking.
